Born in 1959. Study of theology and philosophy in Göttingen, Heidelberg and Frankfurt a.M. Doctorate in theology from Heidelberg in 1987 Vicar (Pastor-in-training) at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg i.O. Habilitation scholarship award of the Fritz-Thyssen-Foundation 1994: Habilitation; Private Docent for systematic theology in Frankfurt a.M.

1995: Appointment as Professor of Systematic Theology in the core areas of Ethics and Philosophy of Religion at Hamburg University 2005-2008: Dean of the Faculty of the Humanities

2010: Appointment as Professor of Systematic Theology/Ethics at the Faculty of Theology, Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg and from 2010-2014 Spokesperson for Saxony Anhalt’s Cluster of Excellence with the research focus “Enlightenment – Religion – Knowledge. Transformations in the Religious and Rational Dimensions of Modernity”. 2014-2016 Dean of the Faculty of Theology.

2012: First Chairman of the Schleiermacher Society.
