Schleiermacher-Society

Deutsche Fassung Deutsche Fassung

The Schleiermacher-Society was founded on 19 September 1996 for the purpose of promoting involvement with the work of Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher. The society is to be located at Halle an der Saale, where Schleiermacher first studied and subsequently began his career as academic teacher.

Unlike almost any other figure, Schleiermacher theoretically grasped and practically shaped the relation of religion and culture under the conditions of modernity. As a result, his name stands for nothing less than a new epoch of Protestantism. The scholarly examination of his publications and their historical impact extends far beyond the realm of theology. Hence the society has assigned itself the central task of creating an international forum for collaborative interdisciplinary work. This purpose shall be carried out first and foremost through the regular organization of scholarly meetings and conferences.
